Instructional design.

Below is a sampling of instructional design pieces that I've created, including some that are still in progress.  To view the actual documents, click on the corresponding image.

Educational poster

Designing posters is always a favorite of mine, as I always enjoy any opportunity to use Adobe's Creative Suite. Photoshop allowed me to creatively manipulate images and text to design a composition which aims to assist children in recognizing and discriminating between warm and cool colors in the art classroom. During my experience as an art teacher, I found many of my younger students struggling to grasp the concept of warm and cool colors, so I found it only appropriate to create a poster emphasizing this theme.

Job aid / Instructional handout

Using Microsoft Word, I created this handout to teach Mac OSX users how to create a cube using a computer animation program, Autodesk Maya. My goal was to design a tool for novice Maya users that incorporated graphics and text in a simple, easy to understand, yet aesthetically appealing manner. The screenshots are meant to emphasize key steps during the process of creating the cube, while the accompanying text is aimed to concisely explain these steps and enhance clarity. Each component was combined with symbols that serve as visual cues in a Word document.

Instructional video

This video was designed using a variety of editing programs, including Adobe Captivate, iMovie, and Microsoft PowerPoint, and was then uploaded to YouTube. These diverse capabilities of these programs enabled me to manipulate music, speech, still images, recorded video clips, and screencasts to then integrate into one uniform movie.

Informational booklet

This 4x4 inch booklet is still in progress and is being created in Adobe Photoshop.  Once finished, this booklet will allow users/customers to flip through four tabbed pages to learn more about the four main features of the store.  The booklet itself serves as one component of the performance improvement plan already being implemented at a struggling family-owned and operated business in Charlottesville, Va.  Consultations with both the owners of this 85 year-old family store and its customers helped to determine business and customer needs, leading to a re-branding initiative.

Learning assessment video

I am currently designing this video using GoAnimate.com and Camtasia, but it is still a work in progress.  I consulted with my client, a local teacher, to brainstorm more effective ways to teach SOL testing skils, specifically those pertaning to the writing section, to her students with special needs.  This video is interactive and once complete, will allow both the instructor and her learners to track their progress through the module, collect virual "prizes" for right answers, and choose their avatar teacher/guide.

Demonstration video

This video was filmed entirely with an iPad,and was shot in front of a green screen. I then edited it using Final Cut Pro to replace the green screen with a backround that is inteded to look like an an art classroom.

Tutorial video

Using Camtasia Studio, I am currently in the midst of creating this tutorial video that that new hires at the JMU Health Center will access as part of the new online orientation that will launch next Fall, of 2013.  This video shows viewers how to access MyMadison, an online management database, highlighting the links most critical to new employees.  When the tutorial is finished, it will contain buttons on a home screen so that users can navigate to the section of importance/interest to them, rather than having to watch the video in its entirety.

iPad movies

These videos were all shot and edited entirely on an iPad with iMovie.  In addition to iMovie, I also used Adobe After Effects to create the newscast.  Although the content of this video is not intended for training purposes, knowing how to create quality videos on the go, with limited devices/software is a helpful skill when shooting in environments that don't allow for extensive equipment or software.  I am able to create videos like these quickly and in a variety of environments to meet many training needs.  iPads are the perfect mobile devices for shooting and editing high quality videos in a time crunch, making them ideal for creating on-the-job training as well as making them more than suitable for other training opportunities.

Depending on the need, sometimes a brief video can make more of an impact and be more effective than other, more traditional training delivery modes and materials.  Videos can also serve as supplemental instruction because they can accommodate diverse employee schedules and lifestyles.  They can be easily accessed by viewers 24/7, at their own convenience.
